2018 will be the tenth anniversary of the largest regional schools Shakespeare Festival of its kind in the world. For the last decade, Open Minds has led the way with this work, in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and funded by organisations including RMBC, the Arts Council England and the National Education Union.
Our 2017 festival was a huge success and took place for two weeks in a beautiful theatre tent in Clifton Park in June. Around 200 school staff, 2000 children and 3500 audience members were part of the festival and did an outstanding job in our bespoke venue.
For 2018, Rotherham Underground will be bringing some exciting new developments to the Festival. We have been listening to children, young people, parents, carers, practitioners and schools and details are below.
We have recruited schools from record numbers of applications and launched the festival in March 2018, with practitioners primed and ready to head out to schools straight away, building to a schools’ festival at the end of the Summer term at Rotherham Civic Theatre on the 11th & 12th June and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th July.
In August 2018, we will be taking a professional family production of Macbeth around the parks of Rotherham for everyone to enjoy in the sunshine (at least we hope it will be sunshine!).
